Roadrunners Pick Up Big Win at Moberly

The Roadrunners defeated the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds 81-72 Jan. 19 and now have a 16-3 overall record with a 2-0 Region XVI record.

The Greyhounds grabbed an 11-6 lead to begin the game as SFCC struggled early to defend the Greyhounds’ guards. Sophomore forward Filip Toric tied the game at 15, grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back in the basket. The game went back and forth throughout the first half with the teams trading baskets and defensive stops.

“I think our defensive intensity picked up,” said Roadrunners Assistant Coach Josh Sash. “We got a couple steals and picked up the ball pressure. They threw a couple of passes out of bounds and our guys fed off that. We got some buckets offensively and ran our sets well.”

With less than seven minutes to go in the half, the Roadrunners pushed the lead to six after a basket by sophomore guard Torres Roundtree. SFCC’s advantage grew to 10 points after a pair of free throws from Roundtree.

The Greyhounds refused to quit on their home floor, going on a run to cut the deficit to four points for a halftime score of 36-32.

Moberly began the second half on fire, going on a 4-0 run to tie the game with 19 minutes to go. Sophomore forward Travis Jordan hit the first of his key three pointers to give SFCC a three-point lead. The Roadrunners stretched the lead to six, courtesy of a Jerel Partlow three-point bomb.

A couple minutes later, with the game once again tied, Jordan again hit a huge three pointer to give SFCC another lead. Moberly fought back again to tie the game at 55 with eight minutes and 41 seconds remaining. Jordan knocked down his third clutch three pointer to give the Roadrunners a 58-55 lead.

A dunk by freshman guard Alfonzo Houston made it a five-point game at 60-55. Roundtree knocked a floating jumper in the lane, was fouled on the shot and converted the three-point play to put the Roadrunners up by seven.

The Greyhounds made a furious rally but sent the Roadrunners to the free-throw line where they were a perfect 16 of 16 for the game.

“Guys stepped up and made their free throws,” said Sash. “We got rebounds and stops and that was enough to win.”

Roundtree led five Roadrunners in double figures with 15 points. Partlow and Houston added 14 points each. Jordan chipped in 13. Houston pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds. Partlow and Houston dished out a team-leading three assist each.
