Recap:

 Roadrunners Start Fast, Defeat Raiders

The State Fair Community College Roadrunners used the three-point shot and a solid defensive effort to open Region XVI play Jan. 13 with a 77-52 victory over the Three Rivers Community College Raiders. The Roadrunners (15-3,1-0) knocked down 10 three-point shots for the game, including three from sophomore Jerel Partlow in the first half.

SFCC set the tone for the game early on when sophomore Torres Roundtree stole the ball in the backcourt and put the Roadrunners ahead with a slam-dunk. They extended the advantage to 10-3 after a pair of three pointers by Partlow and a baseline jumper from sophomore center Matt Webb with just under 15 minutes remaining the half.

The Roadrunners continued to put the pressure on, stretching the lead to 17 points with eight and a half minutes remaining in the half. Three Rivers showed their toughness, cutting the lead to 12 points, but sophomore guard Erik Hunter splashed a big three-point shot to answer for SFCC. The Roadrunners led 33-20 at halftime.

The Raiders opened the second half and cut the lead to nine with 18 minutes and 20 seconds remaining. SFCC answered with a 5-0 run to stretch the advantage back to 14. The Raiders trimmed the lead to nine once again with 15 minutes and 20 seconds remaining in the game.

“I think our defensive intensity waned a little bit,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “After we got some stuff going offensively, I thought our defense definitely picked up. It's amazing how that works. When you make baskets you usually play harder on the defensive end.” our defensive intensity.

Sophomore Travis Jordan answered the Raiders’ run with his second three of the half, then SFCC pushed the lead back to 17 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. Sophomore forward Filip Toric electrified the Roadrunner faithful with a one-handed dunk over a Three Rivers player to put the icing on the cake for SFCC. The Roadrunners went on to grab a 70-41 lead, their biggest of the evening, and pick up their first Region XVI win of the season.

Partlow and Webb tied for team-high scoring honors with 12 points each. Toric contributed 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Roundtree and Partlow dished out a team-leading four assists each.

SFCC will return to the court at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19, when they travel to Moberly to take on the Moberly Area Community College Greyhounds.

“Moberly is playing well right now,” said Thomas. “They beat Indian Hills on the road. It's going to be a tough game and we're looking forward to it."
