Roadrunners Win Season Opener
The State Community College Roadrunners shook off a sluggish start Friday night to defeat the Missouri Valley College junior varsity Vikings 77-45. The Nov. 5 game was part of the opening round of the McDonald's Classic.
SFCC led 19-15 with six minutes and 34 seconds left in the first half. The Roadrunners extended the advantage to a seven-point lead at halftime, and then outscored Missouri Valley in the second half by 25 points to clinch the victory.
"Basically, we had to play harder," said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “In the second half, Dominique Newton did a good job pressuring the ball and making shots for us, kind of igniting us."
Newton led the Roadrunners offensively with 16 points. Alfonzo Houston contributed 15 points, tied for the team lead with six rebounds and dished out a team-leading four assists. Jerel Partlow added 11 points and also tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Filip Toric also contributed six rebounds and Travis Jordan had a team-high four steals.
Thomas was happy to pick up his first career win as a head coach.
"They say the first win is always the hardest to get,” said Thomas. “In my opinion, it's just another game. Tomorrow is the next important day."
