Lady Roadrunners Win Battle of Ranked Teams

After a 48-hour snow delay, the fourth-ranked Lady Roadrunners (20-2, 6-0 in Region XVI) emerged with a come-from-behind 69-68 victory over the 13th-ranked Iowa Western Community College Lady Reivers Feb. 3 at the Davis Center.
Iowa Western jumped out to an 11-2 lead. The Lady Reivers stretched the advantage to 23-6 with nine minutes and 41 seconds remaining in the first half.
“They were hitting everything,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We weren’t defending well and weren’t playing aggressively. I started a different line up, which may have affected play as well, but the girls weathered the storm."
The Lady Roadrunners shook off the difficult start and made a run of their own. Sophomore guard Ciara Leak drove down court with 17 seconds remaining in the first half. She knocked down a driving jumper to send her team to the locker room with a 39-38 advantage.
“We started running more,” said Bucher. “We pushed the ball and made them run the floor. We got some steals off of our half-court trap.”
The Lady Roadrunners had to battle from behind once again in the second half. Iowa Western had a five-point lead with fewer than five minutes remaining in the game.
Sophomore forward Ebony Davis cut the lead to three with a spinning jumper in the lane. Iowa Western responded with a basket to extend its lead back to five points. Leak splashed home a three-point shot to get SFCC within two points. Later, Davis completed a three-point play to tie the game.
SFCC locked down on the defensive end to get the stop they needed on the next possession. Sophomore guard/forward Dahlia Booker was fouled while attempting a lay-up; she made the shot, was fouled and converted the three-point play to give her team a 69-66 lead.
The Lady Roadrunners got the stops they needed down the stretch to secure the victory. Iowa Western freshman guard Tyisha Smith missed a shot at the buzzer to end the game.
“We played good defense,” said Bucher. “We missed some key rebounds in a couple of stretches, but for the most part we played good defense. We hit some good shots and free throws to give us the lead. I was pleased with our effort.”
Davis led the Lady Roadrunners’ offensive attack with 20 points. Leak and sophomore guard Hattie Harris added 14 each. Davis also grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds in the game. Freshman guard Tyler Anderson and sophomore guard Arriana Walker dished out a team-leading three assists each in the game.
