Lady Roadrunners Hold off Lady Tigers
The 15th-ranked State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners found themselves in a tussle with the Cowley County Community College Lady Tigers Nov. 26 in the first round of the Moberly Classic. SFCC came out on top of the up-tempo battle 79-70.
The lead changed hands several times early in the first half. SFCC grabbed a 17-16 lead off a jumper from sophomore Ciara Leak. Cowley County took the lead right back at 18-17.
Sophomore Arriana Walker regained the lead by nailing a three pointer to give her team a two-point lead. SFCC turned up the defensive pressure and went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 26-18.
“I thought our pressure was really good, especially about the 12-minute mark,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We really started to get going. We were flying around, getting steals and converting them into lay-ups. That really helped us out a lot.”
The Lady Tigers trimmed the deficit to 27-24 with less than three minutes to go in the half. SFCC responded, taking a 37-29 lead into halftime.
After halftime, SFCC (8-2) used its trademark defensive pressure to stretch the lead to 55-41 with 12 minutes and 10 seconds left in the game. The Lady Tigers used their own defensive pressure to cut the lead to 10 points with five minutes and 46 seconds remaining.
“I thought once we got a bucket it would calm everybody down, and that’s what happened,” said Bucher. “Tatianna Washington hit that big basket, and they never could get much closer than that.”
Washington led the Lady Roadrunners with 24 points. She shot 11-16 from the field. Leak contributed 15 points and four assists. Walker added 12 points and eight assists, and seven steals. Sophomore Ebony Davis pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
