The 17th-ranked (5-2) State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners opened their portion of the SFCC Classic Nov. 19 with a 61-40 victory over Coffeyville Community College. SFCC used outstanding defensive effort to hold Coffeyville to just two field goals in the first half.
“It was aggressive defense, with great help-side defense,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We were 6-47 (from the field). Our defense was good in the first half, and I told the team if they kept that defensive pressure in the second half they’d build on the lead and good things would happen.”
SFCC had offensive struggles of its own in the first half. The Lady Roadrunners took a 22-10 lead into the break. They forced the Lady Ravens into 20 first-half turnovers.
Coffeyville cut the Lady Roadrunners’ lead to 24-16 with 15 minutes and 9 seconds left in the game. SFCC put the game away with a big run. Sophomore Maci Wisdom hit a couple big shots to get the run going. Sophomore Ciara Leak was fouled while attempting a three-point shot. She knocked down all three free throws to put her team up 37-23 with 10 minutes and 37 seconds left in the game. SFCC broke the game open late, taking a 48-27 lead with seven minutes and 20 seconds left in the game.
Leak led SFCC with 18 points and four assists. Wisdom contributed 15 points. Sophomore Ebony Davis had a team-leading eight rebounds and tied for the team lead in steals with three. Freshman Alexas Brown tied for the team lead dishing out four assists. Jallisa Lewis tied for the team lead in steals with three.
“Maci Wisdom had an exceptional game tonight; she came in, shot the ball well and played well defensively,” said Bucher. “Jallisa Lewis played a really good game, and got a lot of steals.”
SFCC will take on Neosho County Community College Nov. 20.
