Defense Leads Lady Roadrunners to Victory
The State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners opened their portion of the McDonald's Classic in style Friday night, Nov. 5, with a 93-43 victory over the Central Methodist University junior varsity Lady Eagles. SFCC jumped out to an 11-2 lead with 15 minutes and 19 seconds left to go the first half and never looked back.
The Lady Roadrunners set the tone of the game with stifling defense in the first half, forcing 21 turnovers. SFCC played every player on the roster in the first half on the way to a 41-15 lead.
"This was the first time we didn't have a let down when we brought the subs into the game,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “Everybody just stepped right in and our defense was really good. We kept the hammer on the whole time."
Every player scored for SFCC (2-0). Sophomore Ebony Davis led three Lady Roadrunners in double-figures with 13 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Arriana Walker contributed 11 points and a team-leading seven steals. Sophomore Tatianna Washington also had 11 points in her first action of the season. Sophomore Dahlia Booker dished out a team-leading five assists.
"It was team effort," said Bucher. “I hate to just single out one person. It was balanced, and that’s what it's going to take to be a successful team."
