Opponent: Penn Valley Community College
W 85-75 |
The 15th ranked State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners withstood a big second-half run from Penn Valley Community College to secure an 85-75 victory in their first game after the holiday break on Friday, Jan. 8. State Fair took a 24-16 lead with just over four minutes left in the first half. They extended that lead to 43-21 at the half.
"I thought our pressure defense was really good in the first half,” said Assistant Coach Kevin Bucher. “We've been stressing turning the opponents and really trying to wear them down . . . I thought we got out in the passing lanes and got several steals. We made easy transition buckets, and that's what really bloomed the lead in the first half."
SFCC (15-1) expanded their lead over Penn Valley to 34 points with 10 minutes to go in the game. However, the Scouts came storming back to cut the lead to 12 points with three minutes left in the game.
"We want to get everybody in the game and give them an opportunity to hopefully keep developing,” said Bucher. “At the time, we took quite a few of our starters out. Probably, in hindsight, we should have left more of our starters in and subbed in a player who hadn't played as much, so we keep that continuity.”
Even though the Scouts turned on the heat, the Lady Roadrunners made the plays to preserve the win. Sophomore Brittany Young led four players in double figures with 25 points, five assists, four steals, three rebounds and three blocked shots. Freshmen Maci Wisdom and Ciara Leak contributed 16 points each. Leak also contributed a team-leading seven assists and four steals. Freshman Hattie Harris added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists
State Fair will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 13, against Iowa Western Community College.
