State Fair Roadrunners survived a furious second-half rally to fend off Penn Valley Community College 100-98 in double overtime on Feb. 24. State Fair saw a12-point lead disappear in the second half that set up an opportunity for the fans to see some late game heroics.
State Fair had two chances to win the game on the last possession of regulation, but they didn't convert, which set up the first overtime. The Roadrunners found themselves down by five in the first overtime, but freshman Dominique Newton hit a three-point shot to cut the deficit to two points. Tailing by two points with 2.2 seconds on the clock, State Fair ran an underneath the basket out of bounds play.
"We tried to run a play where we throw it into someone who would handoff to Justyn Watkins who would either get fouled or score,” explained Head Coach Dale Ribble. “Well, they overplayed it and George (Williams) did a good job of reading that. He was able to slip to the basket, get the ball and score."
State Fair made plays in the second overtime and hit free throws to hang on for the win.
“We were fortunate to win,” said Ribble. “I don't think there's any doubt about that. . . We were able to make enough plays to win the game, but we are very fortunate to get out of here with a win tonight."
The Roadrunners (20-9, 4-3 in Region 16) were led in scoring by Watkins who led five Roadrunners in double figures with 26 points. Newton contributed 22 points. Matthew Webb pitched in 13. George Williams added 12 and Brandon Scaife netted 10 points.
Watkins and Filip Toric tied the team lead in rebounds with 6 each. Dominic Williams and Clifton Fleming dished out a team-leading four assists each.
State Fair will close out the home portion of their schedule at Homecoming on Feb. 27 against Mineral Area College.
