The State Fair Roadrunners picked up a big Region 16 win at home Jan. 27 over Missouri State University-West Plains, 60-56. SFCC jumped out to a 23-19 lead with just under six minutes to go in the first half. By halftime, State Fair extended the lead to 37-28, which is would be the biggest lead either team would have in the game.
"I thought we played really well the last five or six minutes the first half,” said Coach Ribble. “It was a back-and-forth game, and we got a little bit of a cushion at the end of the first half. I thought some guys made some good defensive plays. We got out in transition and got some easy baskets late in the first half, and we made an effort to get the ball inside.”
West Plains came back in the second half to erase the deficit and even grab a four-point lead. However, the Roadrunners refused to quit and secured the victory.
"We had some guys make some good plays late in the game,” said Ribble. “Cliff (Fleming) and Justyn Watkins got to the free-throw line several time. For the most part, we stepped up and made our free throws."
SFCC (16-6, 2-1 in Region 16) was led in scoring by sophomore Dominic Williams with 13 points. He also contributed nine rebounds and three assists. Fleming added 12 points, and freshman Matthew Webb recorded a double-double with 10 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. Watkins dished out a team-high four assists.
The Roadrunners will travel to Mineral Area College for a Region 16 road contest, on Jan. 30.
"I think our guys understand by now after playing three region games how hard it is to compete against these teams,” said Ribble. “It should be fun to go on the road and see what happens."
