The Roadrunners regained their outside shooting touch on Jan. 23 when the team traveled to Salina, Kansas to take on Brown Mackie College. State Fair came away with the victory 77-57.
The Roadrunners (15-6, 1-1 in Region 16) shot a blistering 11-19 from beyond the arc in the first half to take a 47-28 lead into the locker room. They shot 14-28 for the game.
"It was one of those games where shots were falling,” said Assistant Coach Kevin Thomas. “The guys did a really good job making their shots, and I think we held Brown Mackie to 27 or 28 points in the first half, so we did a pretty decent job of guarding them. Overall, there were a lot of guys that contributed and did a lot of good things."
Freshman Dominique Newton knocked down five three-point shots and led the team in scoring with 19 points. Freshman Filip Toric contributed 17 points, and sophomores Clifton Fleming, Justyn Watkins and freshman Matthew Webb recorded nine points each.
State Fair returns home for a big Region 16 match-up against Missouri State University-West Plains on Jan. 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
"We need to be patient on defense and really stick to our principles,” said Thomas. “West Plains does a really good job of cutting, penetrating, and kicking to the open guy. They average over 20 three-point attempts a game. We have to do a good job of being able to help on defense, but not help so far that we can’t get back to the shooters. We need to limit them to one shot and go down to the other end and get shots for ourselves.”
