The State Fair Community College Roadrunners started the second half of the season with a thrilling 72-71 victory over Penn Valley Community College Scouts on Tuesday, Jan. 5 in Kansas City. The Roadrunners (11-5) started fast, jumping out 10-3 to begin the game.
"I thought we shared the ball really well, especially the first half,” said Head Coach Dale Ribble. “We got the lead out to 15 in the first half. I really thought we did a good job of attacking their zone at times. We had some guys step up and make some shots."
The Penn Valley Scouts refused to give up on their home floor and made a run in the second half, even grabbing the lead. However, State Fair made the plays necessary to preserve the victory.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by sophomore Justyn Watkins with 26 points, and freshman Dominique Newton contributed 14. Sophomore Clifton Fleming added 13 points.
"Those guys all scored the ball well for us, especially Justyn,” said Ribble. “He got a lot of stuff against their zone. He was able to get inside of it and make some plays when he caught it in there. Dominique Newton made some big threes, and Cliff did the same thing.”
Freshman Filip Toric led the team in rebounds with six. Sophomore Dominic Williams dished out a team-high five assists.
The Roadrunners will travel to West Plains, Missouri on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 8 and 9 take on Southern University Shreveport and Oklahoma Wesleyan University Junior Varsity
