The State Fair Community College Roadrunners traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa, to take part in the Iowa Western Classic Dec. 4-5. In the opening round, State Fair suffered a heartbreaking, triple overtime 92-89 loss to Iowa Lakes Community College, the fifth ranked team in NJCAA Division II basketball.
State Fair took a 35-32 lead into halftime, but they struggled with turnovers and missed free throws throughout the second half. The game was tied at 70 at the end of regulation, 74 at the end of the first overtime and 83 at the end of the second overtime.
"We had a lot of opportunities to win it. We missed free throws down the stretch. It's a game we really could have won if we would've done some things down the stretch to seal it," said Head Coach Dale Ribble.
State Fair (8-4) was led in scoring by freshman Jay Lee with 24 points. Dominique Newton and Matthew Webb added 17 apiece. Sophomore Justyn Watkins contributed 12 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Sophomores Clifton Fleming pitched in 10 points, and Dominic Williams dished out a team-leading six assists.
