The SFCC Lady Roadrunners advanced to the Region 16 Championship game with an 80-56 victory over Iowa Western on March 5 in Jefferson City, Missouri.
In the first half, State Fair was down by three with just under 10 minutes remaining but turned up the heat on IW when the team starting using their quickness to seize control of the game. With five minutes and 15 seconds remaining in the first half, State Fair took a 30-29 lead and would stretch the advantage to 42-33 at the half.
"It was a fast-paced, up-tempo game,” said Assistant Coach Kevin Bucher. “We got Iowa Western out of their game, and that's one thing we wanted to do with our speed . . . The girls played hard; they wanted it, and the intensity was there."
State Fair (27-4) was led in scoring by sophomore Brittany Young with 26 points and three assists. Freshman Maci Wisdom added 14 points and three assists. Freshman Hattie Harris had a good all-around game with 11 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Freshman Jaleisha Barrett tied for the team-lead pulling down eight rebounds. Freshman Arriana Walker pitched in with nine steals, eight assists and seven rebounds. Freshman Tatianna Washington added three steals.
"There was a great crowd at the game,” commented Bucher. “I think we had the most people here out of all the teams. Tomorrow, I'll be very surprised if we don't have even more. Our players feed off the crowd, and that's what we like to see.”
State Fair will take on the Jefferson College Lady Vikings, who are the No. 1 seed in the Region 16 Tournament as well as the No. 1 ranked team in the country, for the championship trophy.
