The State Fair Lady Roadrunners survived a furious rally from the Iowa Western Lady Reivers to pull out a 69-68 victory on Feb. 17 and moved one step closer to locking up the second seed in the Region 16 Tournament.
State Fair (24-2, 8-1 in Region 16) got off to its trademark fast start as they shot out to a 17-6 lead with about 14 minutes left in the first half. State Fair was able to get out and run early in the game, forcing their tempo on Iowa Western.
"We controlled the game in the first half for about the first 15 minutes,” said Student Manager William Holtz. “We went up by 16 to start the game . . . Iowa Western hung on and chipped away at our lead. The second half was a different story."
Iowa Western continued to chip away at SFCC’s lead, even grabbing a 58-56 lead at the seven and a half-minute mark of the second half. At that point in the game, State Fair Assistant Coach Kevin Bucher called for the team to switch to a zone defense. This change slowed the Reivers just enough to allow the Lady Roadrunners’ offense to get back on track.
The last few minutes were a classic back-and-forth battle that included a swishing three- pointer from freshman Ciara Leak from about 30 feet from the basket. However, Iowa Western still had a chance to win the game on the last possession, but the driving shot attempt from the Lady Reivers resulted in a collision and State Fair hung on for this important victory.
The Lady Roadrunners were led in scoring by Leak, who registered her second triple-double on the season with 27 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals. Sophomore Brittany Young contributed 20 points, three rebounds and two assists. Freshman Hattie Harris added seven points and three rebounds. Freshman Arriana Walker pitched in with two points, five assists, five steals and three rebounds.
State Fair returns to game action at 5 p.m. Feb. 20 in Moberly, Missouri.
