The No. 12 ranked SFCC Lady Roadrunners traveled to Hillsboro, Missouri on Jan. 23 for a battle against No. 3 ranked Jefferson College Lady Vikings that ended in defeat 78-53.
"I can see why Jefferson is ranked number three in country,” said Assistant Coach Kevin Bucher. “They have guards, and they have posts. They are a very good team. We held them close in the first half, but they really used their size and speed against us in the second half.”
The Lady Roadrunners (18-2, 3-1 in Region 16) trailed by 10 points at halftime 32-22. State Fair would trim the lead to eight, but they would get no closer.
"I thought Jefferson attacked the glass really well,” said Bucher. “We didn't step over and stop the penetration."
Freshman Ciara Leak led the team in scoring with 17 points. Sophomore Brittany Young contributed 11.
State Fair will return home for another Region 16 match-up against Crowder College at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 27. Bucher feels that ball handling will be an area of emphasis in preparation for Crowder.
"We need to make sure we take care of the basketball against the press,” said Bucher. “I think it may be more of a token press, but I still think Crowder will try to trap some as well. We have to do a better job of handling that.”
