Opponent: Three Rivers Community College
W 74-61 |
The 13th ranked Lady Roadrunners fought off a stiff challenge from the Three Rivers Community College Lady Raiders on Jan. 16 to pick up a 74-61 home win.
State Fair (17-1, 2-0 in Region 16) jumped out to a 15-4 lead with 11 minutes to go in the first half. Three Rivers came back to cut the lead to 15-10 with eight minutes and 47 seconds left to go in the first half. This would be a recurring theme throughout the game.
“Three Rivers is a very good perimeter shooting team,” said Student Assistant William Holtz. “Those were big shots that they hit. We did not do a good job of closing out."
The Lady Raiders trimmed their deficit to two points during the first half, but that was as close as they would get. At halftime, State Fair held a 34-27 lead.
In the second half, SFCC stretched the lead to 15 with 14 minutes and 38 seconds left in the game. Over the next 11 minutes, Three Rivers fought back to cut the lead to eight, but the Lady Roadrunners’ defensive wall defused their final attack. Offensively, freshman Arriana Walker’s three-point play helped to put the game away for SFCC
"Arriana plays hard all the time and that play was important to sealing the win," said Holtz.
Freshman Ciara Leak led in scoring with 21 points, including a big three-point shot down the stretch. She also pulled down eight rebounds, made seven assists and two steals. Walker added 16 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Sophomore BrittanyYoung pitched in 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Freshman Jaleisha Barrett pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and also contributed five assists and four rebounds.
State Fair will return to game action on Jan. 20 against the Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
