The nationally ranked No. 13 State Fair Lady Roadrunners passed their first test in Region 16 play on Jan. 13 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Even though the first three minutes were shaky, State Fair survived and secured the win 81-77 over Iowa Western Community College Reivers.
Two tactical changes proved to be the turning point in the game for the Lady Roadrunners.
"We took a quick timeout to set up a full-court pressure on the Reivers, which changed the game, and we also rebounded much better from that point on," said Assistant Coach Kevin Bucher.
State Fair (16-1-1-0 in Region 16) took a 43-36 lead into halftime. Sophomore Brittany Young scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the first half and a team-leading six steals, and five assists.
"We talked to Brittany before the game started to let her know that she was going to have to lead the freshmen . . . The best thing was that she played within herself instead of forcing shots," said Bucher.
Iowa Western made a run at the 10-minute mark of the second half to take the lead, but State Fair hit some big shots down the stretch to regain the lead.
"There were several team members who played a part in winning this ballgame," said Bucher.
Freshman Ciara Leak contributed 21 points, including several big baskets with the shot clock running down in the second half. Freshman Dahlia Booker recorded a double-double with 11 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds.
