The SFCC Lady Roadrunners (6-0) played their first home game Nov. 20 after receiving a 23rd national ranking in the polls. State Fair faced Lincoln Trail College Lady Statesmen, who were ranked 14th in the nation, in the first round of the SFCC Classic. The Lady Roadrunners emerged with the upset victory 60-56.
"We had a couple girls step up tonight that we haven't had in the last couple games. It was a team effort. They executed exactly what Coach Bucher went over in the pre-game. The first half was the best that we've executed offensively and defensively," said Head Coach Darren Pannier.
Freshman guard Ciara Leak led the Lady Roadrunners in scoring with 16 points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Sophomore BrittanyYoung contributed 11 points and four assists. Freshman Arriana Walker added eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Freshman Dahlia Booker chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds. Freshman Maci Wisdom had a solid all-around game with seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman Lindsey Stanley pulled down seven rebounds and took three charges from the Lady Statesmen.
Lincoln Trail is the highest ranked opponent the Lady Roadrunners have defeated in Coach Pannier's tenure. The ensuing matches, however, do not get any easier. On Nov. 21 the Lady Roadrunners take on Kaskaskia College from southwestern Illnois. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
