The Heckart Science and Allied Health Center opened in 2008 and was named in recognition of a gift from Sue Heckart and the Heckart Family Foundation. The 42,000-square-foot building includes a two-story atrium with natural light; a multimedia conference center with seating for nearly 200 persons to use for large presentations and campus and public meetings; a discovery kiosks to feature science displays, experiments and learning activities; computer and work stations; individual labs for chemistry, biology, physics and anatomy/physiology; a lab prep room; and student study area.
The second floor features the bi-level associate-degree nursing program, including a nursing skills hospital simulation room modeled after a hospital nursing unit. It features a central nursing station with computerized charting and monitoring equipment and six patient cubicles with state-of-the-art hospital beds and monitoring equipment.
It also features four multimedia classrooms and two rooms housing the METIMan human patient simulator and the new mobile iSTAN emergency care human patient simulator. Both are computer model-driven, full-sized mannequins that provide hands-on learning. The center connects to two main instructional buildings, the Yeater Learning Center and the Fielding Technical Center.
