The Legacy of Plywood U: A History of State Fair Community College, 1966-2002
In September 1968, 436 students walked through the doors of a brand-new community college, built on 15 acres of former cow pasture. The building was prefabricated and consisted of six light-green modular units connected by a central hallway. In good-natured reference to the building's temporary nature, someone dubbed the place, "Plywood U."
In 2001, SFCC commissioned Deborah Noland, an SFCC alumna and long-time instructor, to chronicle the history of the college that began as a dream in 1966. In 2002, The Legacy of Plywood U: A History of State Fair Community College was published.
The 272-page history book is divided into three sections, Building a College From the Ground Up; Building a Permanent Campus; and Building Futures. Interspersed throughout the narrative of each chapter are 64 pages of photographs and Roadrunner Moments, brief anecdotes that convey the unique spirit of SFCC through its people.
If you're looking for a gift for a recent graduate or an alumnus of State Fair Community College, this book would fit the bill. The book sells for $20 and can be purchased from the SFCC Bookstore on campus or online.
