Doctor to discuss vision therapy at parent support meeting

4/27/2012-5/14/2012

SEDALIA—Dr. Susan Lake, a doctor of optometry who specializes in vision therapy for children, will discuss “Vision Perception—Seeing with our Brains: It’s Not Just About Eyesight!” at a May 14 meeting of PLUS (Parents, Providers, Partners – Listening, Understanding, Sharing), a free support group for families with additional needs.

Lake, a board-certified fellow in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, operates a Vision and Learning Center through her optometry practice, Eyecare Specialties, in Warrensburg and Clinton. The center offers vision and speech therapy and other custom therapies and classes for children.

She is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, received a Doctorate of Optometry from Southern College in Memphis and completed an internship in pediatric vision in Maryland.

The group will meet from 6:15-7:45 p.m. May 14 in Thompson Conference Center B in the Heckart Science and Allied Health Center on the State Fair Community College Sedalia campus. Registration deadline is May 7.

Free childcare will be provided at Melita Day Child Development Center on campus. Parents may drop off children at 6 p.m. and pick them up at 7:55 p.m. Please call to register children by May 7.

PLUS is designed so families can meet other families in the community with children who have special needs; meet with experts from across the state; tap into resources they may not know exist; and develop a support network.

For more information or to register, call Sarah Williams, continuing education coordinator, at (660) 530-5822 or e-mail swilliams19@sfccmo.edu. Registration details are also available at www.sfccmo.edu/workshoponwheels.

The course is part of SFCC’s Workshop on Wheels Professional Development Institute. It is sponsored by the college’s office of Lifelong Learning.
