SFCC Adult Education and Literacy program receives grantPosted 6/11/2012SEDALIA—The State Fair Community College Adult Education and Literacy program has received a $60,000 grant to help teach English and civics to community residents for whom English is a second language (ESL). The grant, from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Adult Education and Literacy, will be used to develop and operate a program to help students gain proficiency in the English language through instruction in United States government and history, the naturalization process and civic engagement. The program will also prepare students to become U.S. citizens. The funds will pay for instructors, instructional supplies and testing materials to serve about 200 students. Debra Williams, program director, said all instruction would include reading, writing and speaking American English. To participate, students must be at least 17, not enrolled in any secondary school and have limited proficiency in the English language. The grant is for one year, beginning July 1, with the possibility of two one-year renewals, said Williams. SFCC’s AEL program provides classes at 23 locations in nine counties.
